GneissWare™ Mineral Catalog Tips & FAQs
Tips & Frequently Asked Questions
  • I'm entering a catalog entry, but the locality is missing from the standard list.  What should I do?
Since only about 400 localities are included with GneissWare™ Mineral Catalog, it is likely that a specific locality is not in the standard list.  You may continue entering the specimen information, but leave the locality as "Not Selected".  Later, you can enter the locality under the File menu and then the Locations (Standard) option (or use the second button on the toolbar).  Select Help if it is not clear how to proceed entering the locality information.  Later, go back to the Catalog Entry, select and edit the specimen.  The locality you entered will now be available to be selected.

  • Why don't all the minerals display during lookup in catalog entry?
This is likely because the option in Preferences is set to Common, which is the default when GneissWare™ Mineral Catalog is first installed.  Check the Status Line at the bottom of the Main Window -- if the word "COMMON" is present then only those minerals marked as Common will be displayed.  This option allows a subset of about 500 minerals to be displayed, which generally speeds up selection of a particular mineral from the list.  To display all minerals, go to the Files menu and select Preferences.  Uncheck the Common Minerals Only option, and select Ok.

  • Why does text that I enter as lowercase become capitalized, sometimes incorrectly?
This is because the Properize option is set, which is the default when GneissWare™ Mineral Catalog is first installed.  Check the Status Line at the bottom of the Main Window -- if the word "PROPER" is present then any text entered is converted to a standardized upper and lower case when saved for the first time.  This feature help keep a certain degree of uniformity in entered data.  However, it doesn't always interpret some words properly, particularly foreign words or those with unusual capitalization.  To disable this feature, go to the Files menu and select Preferences.  Uncheck the Properize option, and select Ok.  Optionally, if you edit the entry that has been improperly capitalized, and then save it, it will be saved exactly as you corrected it.

  • Why are relatively common minerals like limonite and hornblende missing from the mineral list?
In general, the mineral list is based on approved minerals and names as established by the International Mineralogy Association (IMA).  Some minerals whose names are in common usage are not IMA approved, such as limonite, hornblende or apophyllite.  If you prefer using these names, they can be easily added to the mineral list.  Go to the Files menu and select Minerals Lookup.  Be sure to check the IMA discredited box when making these entries.

  • I want to print out all specimens with comments, or print out specimens in which comments haven't been entered?
In the Reports form, try entering the following in either the Comments or Properties fields: *EMPTY*  for specimens that don't have Comments (or Properties) entered, and *NOT EMPTY* for those that you have entered this data.  Make sure you enter the * characters exactly as shown here.
