Mineral Updates

September 30, 2016
Cady Mt Fluorites
We recently selected a small, high-quality group of green octahedral Fluorites from several flats of material that were collected several years ago from Cady Mountains, San Bernardino Co., California. This is the last of that lot.

California is not known for producing Fluorite specimens, and there are only two localities in the state that have produced green octahedral Fluorites. The Cady Mts. locality and the Felix prospect in Azusa have both historically produced such Fluorites. Both of these localities are now closed to collecting.

The Cady Mts. locality typically doesn't produce such deep colors as seen in some of the specimens in this update. These Fluorites are also unusual in their fluorescence. These are strongly fluorescent in Long Wave ultraviolet, and less so in Short Wave, which is the reverse of most Fluorite.

The inclusion of the Cady Mts. in the new Mojave Trails National Monument, proclaimed by Mr. Obama via executive order, takes away an important mineral locality in California, and likely means no more of these will be produced.
