Andradite garnet with Hedenbergite and Quartz

Serifos Island, Cyclade Islands, Kyklades Prefecture, Aegean Islands Department, Greece

Large Cabinet

100 x 92 x 61 mm overall

A beautiful specimen full of translucent reddish-brown, highly-lustrous Andradite garnets to 14 mm perched on a matrix of fibrous, brownish-green Hedenbergite. Under strong backlight, which I can’t photograph, the garnets have an orangish-red color. Flattened, tabular green Hedenbergite crystals and pale-green clear crystals of Quartz to 7 mm, some doubly terminated, are perched amongst the Andradite. The reverse side is richly studded with numerous, flattened, tabular green Hedenbergite crystals to 7 mm. I see only a few damaged crystals which are not obvious, and unimportant on such a large specimen. The specimen displays well and is quite showy. Classic material from this noted locale, which produces the best Greek garnets, no doubt!
