Riebeckite (var. Crocidolite)
Griqualand, Northern Cape Province, South Africa
23 x 10 x 6 mm overall
An extremely sharp crystal of the the blue Crocidolite variety of Riebeckite, which is often called “blue asbestos”. This crystal has distinctive blue color, high luster and, as seen in the photos, a bit of minor fuzziness. I have never seen a crystal of Crocidolite before this, and have had this in my collection for over 20 years. It is considered one of the most hazardous asbestos minerals and must be handled with care. This pristine thumbnail has Ed Swoboda's original mounting and label. It was held back by Ed for nearly 20 years, when I purchased it in the early 1990s.
