Magnetite with Fluorapatite

Iron Springs District (Three Peaks), Iron Co., Utah, USA

Sold
Large Cabinet

100 x 95 x 44 mm overall

A cluster of sharp, lustrous, metallic-silvery-gray, intergrown octahedrons of Magnetite to 44 mm totally cover a matrix of solid Magnetite, accented with traces of lemon-yellow apatite. A lustrous, well-terminated, mostly complete, lemon-yellow crystal of Fluorapatite to 10 mm across is at the edge of the specimen. The Magnetite luster is brighter and the crystals more isolated than typical for this locality. As the Apatite forms first, and is later engulfed by the Magnetite, causing considerable stresses, finding intact Fluorapatites is not common. This is an excellent example from this classic Utah locality. Under SW UV, the Apatite fluoresces red.
