Sphalerite ( var. Cleophane ) with Quartz and Galena

Deveti Septemvri (9th of September) mine, Madan ore field, Rhodope Mts, Smolyan Oblast, Bulgaria

Sold
Small Cabinet

70 x 60 x 50 mm overall

This floater hosts numerous Sphalerite (var. Cleophane) crystals up to 10 mm, perched on a matrix of white Quartz, which makes the honey color obvious without backlight. These Sphalerite are large for the locality, sharp, and they have good luster. Several small (up to 4 mm) Galena cubes with octahedral modifications, one partly enveloping a small Sphalerite, provide a nice accent. Most of the Cleophanes were mined from the 9th of September mine back in the '90s, and they were present on the market for a short time. These Cleophane were held in very high regard by the miners and local collectors because of their rarity and translucent olive green color. This is the last of my stock. The overall aesthetics of this specimen are great, and there is only a damaged crystal on the periphery and another one on what I consider the base for display. All sides can be displayed, which is not common from this locality.
